Guide for Riding Programs and Coaches

Guide for Riding Programs and Coaches

People with disabilities may be born that way, involved in an accident, or subjected to a deteriorating condition. Likewise a Para-Equestrian may be a person born with a disability who develops into an equestrian, or an equestrian who develops a disability though an accident or deteriorating condition.

It takes an observant coach to recognize talent, passion and drive, and all three must be present before Para-Equestrian competition should be considered. Horses are therapeutic and recreational, and the majority of therapeutic program riders should not join the competitive stream. Those with emotional, developmental, social and mental conditions and those with conditions that are contraindicative to intense training and commitment will not fit into a Para-Equestrian program but may enjoy some competitive fun within the therapy program or at local shows.

The goal of this guide is to explain the level of commitment and cost required and to outline steps to assist those who really do have what it takes to become a Para-Equestrian.
