January 26, 2012 — Eric Lamaze of Schomberg, ON, was named the CAVALOR 'Athlete of the Month' for December by Jump Canada.
Following the tragic loss of his Olympic partner Hickstead, a 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion owned by Ashland Stables and Torrey Pines Stables, on November 6, Lamaze competed at the CSI5* Paris Gucci Masters in France the first weekend of December. In the Rolex Top 10 Final, featuring the top 10 ranked riders in the world, Lamaze posted two clear rounds riding Coriana van Klapscheut, a nine-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare owned by Artisan Farms and his Torrey Pines Stable. Using the time in the second round to determine to winner, Lamaze placed second with 48.25 seconds to Ireland’s Billy Twomey who stopped the clock in 48.03 seconds.
The following week, a special presentation was held Saturday evening, December 10, at CSI5*-W Geneva, Switzerland, where Lamaze was recognized as the ‘Rider of the Year’ for the second year in a row. Determined by a vote of the International Jumping Riders Club membership, the ‘Rider of the Year’ title is awarded by the equestrian publication yearbook, L’Annee Hippique.
The following day, December 11, commentator Scott Russell announced the results of an on-line poll for the CBC Sports ‘Athlete of the Year’ during the Sunday afternoon sports broadcast. Olympic champions Lamaze and Hickstead won by an overwhelming majority, earning 56.9 percent of the popular vote among the 12 finalists.
“Equestrian is not mainstream like baseball or hockey or basketball, so it is an honour for our sport to have a show jumping athlete recognized as the athlete of the year,” said Lamaze. “It is hard to put into words how it feels to have so much support from the fans. It is also great to be recognized by Jump Canada and CAVALOR.”
As the CAVALOR 'Athlete of the Month' for December, Lamaze receives a gift certificate from title sponsor CAVALOR Inc.
