November 26, 2010 — Rachel Schnurr of Waterloo, ON, emerged the winner of the Running Fox CET Medal Final on Thursday, November 11, at the 2010 Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON.
Riding her horse Magic Jumper, her 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, Schnurr won the CET Medal Final which was held over two days and included three phases— Flat/Gymnastic, Jumping and a Final Four test.
In the Flat/Gymnastic phase held Wednesday, November 10, riders were required to complete a demanding gymnastic course featuring bounces and trot rails. Schnurr placed second, with a score of 89, one point behind the early leader Miranda Coon of South Surrey, BC. Schnurr returned to the Ricoh Coliseum the following day where she handily won the Jumping Phase with a score of 88.
The top four riders returned for a final test, which included a trot oxer, walk fence and a halt. Schnurr and Magic Jumper performed an almost flawless final test to secure the win.
“Winning the CET medal has meant a lot to me,” said Schnurr, who is coached by Hyde Moffatt. “It was one of my goals to win it. I've been working for about five years towards that goal and I have finally achieved it. The win also meant a lot to me because I've always done fairly well at the Regional Finals and then made it to the Royal, which hasn’t always gone as well as I would have liked. Finally winning it this year was a huge deal.”
Designed to be a foundation for riders moving from the hunter divisions into jumper competition, the Running Fox CET Medal is an equitation competition where the riders are judged on their position and riding style, as well as their ability to control the horse over a jumper course. The top 16 riders, qualified from four Regional Finals, were invited to contest the Running Fox CET Medal Final at the Royal Horse Show.
As the winner, Schnurr received a new Childeric saddle donated by long-time CET Medal Final sponsor, Running Fox.
“For ten years Running Fox has enjoyed sponsoring the CET Finals,” said Debra Smith, co-owner of Running Fox. “The class was started in 1988 by Mrs. Barbara Anderson and it is a great class to develop up and coming riders. The Royal Winter Fair is a super showcase for the dedication and talents of the qualified riders. The finalists did an excellent job of completing the tests given to them and this year, Rachel Schnurr, the winner, came out on top. Congratulations to all finalists on a job well done.”
Nicole Walker of Aurora, ON, was the Reserve Champion while Miranda Coon of South Surrey, BC, finished third. Cassandra Kahle, of Langley, BC placed fourth.
