CEO's Twitter

In November, I had the great privilege of representing the interests of the Canadian equine sector at a series of national and international decision-making councils, amongst others: Equine Canada's national meetings at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto; the International Equestrian Federation's General Assembly; and the Canadian Olympic Committee's AGM.

I have always felt that there is no greater honour than representing our country -- in sport, in public service, or indeed in any other capacity -- and I hope that I brought credit to our federation.

In a new effort to directly engage Canadians in the governance of our sector, Equine Canada embarked on an experiment in the use of micro-blogging, to keep our members informed of the course of debate at these meetings, to invite our members’ views while debate is unfolding, and to keep our members abreast of decisions the moment they were taken.

Below are two sets of Twitter tweets: one is a PDF record of my personal tweets during these meetings, which described the meetings live from the conference table, and one is Equine Canada's live official tweets, which continue to announce significant events and provide links to more extensive information.

EC's Official Tweets

I am grateful to all our members who sent me an electronic "tap on the shoulder" via e-mail in response to my tweets during the debates, to express their views on the positions Canada should take, and I plan to reprise Twittering at this page during the next set of major Equine Canada meetings.

Twittering is a novel approach for Equine Canada in the engagement of our members in national and international decision-making, and I can not claim to be certain about how well it is likely to work in the long term.  Tweeting has great power in its immediacy, but it also has inherent limitations in its ability to convey context and nuance.  I hope that you will give us your judgement on this experiment as it unfolds.
