Akaash comes to Equine Canada with a background as an avid recreational
and competitive equestrian: he volunteered for many years as a rider
with the Canadian Forces’ mounted cavalry, and twice captained UNICEF
Team Canada, the national Equestrian Skill-at-Arms team. At the 2008
FEI International Championships, he led the team to three gold medals
and one bronze out of the four team-disciplines.
Immediately before joining Equine Canada, Akaash was CEO of Concordis,
a foundation involved in international peacebuilding and armed conflict
resolution. He was decorated with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in
the national honours in recognition of his work on the Arab-Israeli
conflict.
From 1998 to 2003, he served as National Policy Chair of the Liberal
Party of Canada and as a member of the party’s governing National
Executive. In 2000, the then Prime Minister named him as one of the
seven people responsible for drafting the Liberal Red Book platform.
A frequent contributor to national debate, Akaash was named as one of
Maclean’s magazine’s 50 “most well known and respected personalities”.
Akaash earned his Master of Arts from Oxford University, in the Honour
School of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. While a student, he was
the first non-European and first non-Briton elected President of the
student government in the history of the 900 year-old University. He
also earned a United Nations University ILI certificate in
International Leadership.
An active volunteer, he has taught adult literacy, he has served as a
director on a range of international development and local community
Boards, and he is particularly involved with UNICEF Canada’s efforts to
eradicate childhood and maternal HIV-AIDS.
His personal web site is www.Maharaj.org.
