1.    What are the differences in type of Sport Licences with regards to the fees?
You need a Platinum Sport License if:
  • You compete in EC sanctioned Platinum level competitions
  • You own a horse that competes in EC sanctioned Platinum level competitions
  • You are competing in FEI sanctioned competitions, divisions or classes outside of Canada
  • You are competing in FEI (CIC and CCI) horse trials
  • The cost is $175.00 ($25 discount for provincial members from BC, MB, NB, and ON)
You need a Gold Sport License if:
  • You compete in EC sanctioned Gold level competitions (i.e. ‘A’ circuit, national level)
  • You own a horse that competes in EC sanctioned Gold level competitions
  • You are an EC sanctioned coach (Level 1 or higher)
  • You are an EC sanctioned official, steward, judge, technical delegate or course designer
  • You are competing at Preliminary, Intermediate and Advanced three day events and horse trials
  • The cost is $125.00 ($25 discount for provincial members from BC, MB, NB, and ON)
You need a Silver Sport License if:
  • You compete in EC sanctioned Silver level competitions (i.e. Trillium circuit, provincial level)
  • You own a horse that competes in EC sanctioned Silver level competitions
  • You are an EC sanctioned instructor
  • You are competing at Training horse trials
  • The cost is $85.00 ($25 discount for provincial members from BC, MB, NB, and ON)
You need a Bronze Sport License if:
  • You compete in EC sanctioned Bronze level competitions (i.e. primary or schooling level)
  • You own a horse that competes in EC sanctioned Bronze level competitions
  • You are competing at Entry and Pre-Training horse trials
  • The cost is $45.00 ($25 discount for provincial members from BC, MB, NB, and ON)
You need a Corporate Sport License if:
  • Your company, corporation or syndicate owns a horse that competes in EC sanctioned competitions at any level
  • NOTE – at least one member of the company, corporation or syndicate must hold a Gold or Platinum sport license each year that the company, corporation or syndicate is active
  • NOTE - Corporate sport licenses can not be renewed until the member of the company, corporation or syndicate has renewed his or her sport license
  • The cost is $300.00
You need a Farm Sport License if:
  • Your own a farm and wish to have your horse(s) passported under the farm name
  • NOTE – at least one owner of the farm must hold a Gold sport license each year that farm is active
  • NOTE - Farm sport licenses can not be renewed until the farm owner his or her sport license
  • NOTE – Farm licenses are a one time fee of $25.00 – only horse licenses need to be renewed on a yearly basis after the initial registration.
2.    What is Amateur Status?
  • Amateur status is defined as non-professional.
  • A Sport License holder is only eligible for Amateur classes and divisions if they meet the definition of an Amateur and hold their Amateur status. Amateurs must not receive remuneration for training, coaching or working as an official, with the exception of instruction of or coaching of the disabled.
  • Please see the Glossary in Section A General Regulations of the Rules of Equine Canada for the definition of "remuneration."
  • For the Amateur rules and definitions please see the Rules of Equine Canada, Section A General Regulations, Article A902. The Rules of Equine Canada are also available free of charge, in PDF form, on the Equine Canada website.
  • In order to be identified as an Amateur, and eligible for Amateur divisions and classes, when applying for, or renewing a Sport Licence, applicants 18 years of age and older must check the 'Amateur' box on the Sport License form, and pay the Amateur fee. Please see Article A903.

3. Does a Sport License holder who is under the age of 18 require Amateur Status?
  • No, the Amateur status only applies to Sport License holders who are 18 years of age and older as of January 1 of the current year.
4.    Where can I find the Sport License form on the web site? 5. If the applicant is not present, can I (parent/credit card holder) sign for the Amateur Status?
  • If the applicant is over 18, a Sport License holder, and adheres to the rules as stated on the form then yes, you may sign for that person.
6. I am the owner of a horse competing in EC sanctioned competitions, but do not compete myself, do I need a sport licence?
  • Yes, the horse owner needs to be a Sport License holder in order for the horse to compete in EC sanctioned competition.
7. I am only showing in 1 or 2 shows this year, do I need to purchase a full Sport Licence?
  • A Temporary Sport Licence can be purchased. It is to be paid to the competition secretary and allows the person the privilege of competing at the competition where the sport license was purchased.
  • A Temporary Sport License holder is not entitled to purchase a passport, nor accumulate points.

8. What is the fee for a family Sport Licence?
  • Equine Canada no longer offers a Family Sport Licence. Each individual needs to purchase the Sport Licence appropriate for their age and level of competition.
9. Can a Farm own a passported horse?
  • A farm can own a passported horse. A one-time fee applies, and the owner of the farm needs to be a Gold Sport License holder. As long as the owner is current, so is the stable/farm.
  • The farm does not need a Corporation/Syndicate Sport License unless the name contains "Limited" or "Incorporated."

10. Is the Optional Travel Coverage the same as the insurance offered through my provincial office?
  • No, Equine Canada's insurance is for those traveling outside Canada. It is valid for up to 60 days and covers the member, as well as their spouse and children.
  • Our insurance is only for Sport License holders over the age of 18.
  • The insurance offered through the provincial associations is a liability insurance that is usually included with their membership fee.

11. Can my child receive the Travel/Accident insurance?
  • No, it is only issued to adults as it includes their spouse and children.
12. Do new Sport License holders need to pay the Late Fee, if applying after April 1?
  • No, the late fee only applies to Sport License holders who are renewing.
13. What is the turn-around time for processing a Sport Licence?
  • The turn-around time is approximately 10 business days. An option is available to add a Rush fee for three working day processing, or an additional fee for 24 hour processing.

14. My competition is within the next few days. Do I need to pay the Rush Fee to receive confirmation?
  • In order to receive a confirmation, please include the Rush Fee, plus a fax number or email address to send confirmation in time for the show.
  • Sport Licences are usually sent within 24 hours. Express Post is used when the card is needed for the competition. A copy can be faxed or emailed directly to the competition. These services are included in the rush fee.
15. If I am a member of my provincial organization am I an automatic member of Equine Canada?
  • Yes, you are on the provincial/breed organization membership list, but to compete in EC Sanctioned competitions, a sport licence must be purchased.
  • The provincial/breed organizations forward Equine Canada a yearly levy based on the total membership in the organization.
16. If I am a member of Equine Canada through a Provincial/Breed Organization, do I still need to purchase a Sport Licence?
  • You need to purchase a Sport Licence in order to compete as a rider, driver, coach, or act as an official, show secretary. You must also purchase a Sport Licence if you own a passported horse competing at Equine Canada sanctioned competitions.
17. Can I add my provincial membership to the Equine Canada Sport License form, or do I have to contact the provincial association directly?
  • No. All provincial membership fees must be paid directly to the province. 
18. I live in one province and compete in another, do I need to be a member of both?
  • Equine Canada only requires you to have a membership with your home province.
  • However, in order to collect points outside of your home province you must be a member of that provincial association. Please contact that provincial association directly. 
19. Where can I find the rule books?
  • The Rules of Equine Canada are available free of charge, in PDF form, on the Equine Canada website.
  • Non sport license holders can view Equine Canada Rules free of charge.

20. I was a Sport License holder last year. What is my password to renew online?
  • The password can be found at the top of your previous Sport License Renewal Invoice.

21. When purchasing my Sport Licence do I need to include money for the teams listed under "Support" on the form?
  • Any payments to support teams are strictly optional. If donating, please make sure to include the amount in the total at the bottom of the form.
  • Tax receipts for any donations over $10 will be issued in time for Income Tax returns the following year.
22. What information is being given at the horse shows when I sign for the Equine Canada Results Database?
  • Horse name
  • Rider name
  • Rider EC Sport License Number
  • Owner name if different from rider
23. For the Truth Declaration (as a parent/guardian) can I sign for my child?
  • Yes, if you agree to the statement that your child will follow the guidelines stated in our rulebooks and on the form then you may sign the declaration.
24. I am a coach/official, there is no fee listed for this on the Sport License Form, where do I add it on?
  • The fees are only listed on the Renewal Invoice, not on new applications from the website.
  • Please contact the Coaching Department for Coaching fees.

25. Where do I add the Horse License fee and Passport number on the new application form?
  • On the back of the Sport License application passport number and horse's name
  • Otherwise, if you received a Renewal Invoice, all horses that are currently under your ownership will be listed on page 3 and those "Active In Sport" will have been totaled on the front of the form.
  • To change the status of any horse on your Renewal Invoice, please make the changes directly on the form, and add or deduct fees from the first page (on the Horse License fee line) and change the total accordingly.
  • For your convenience, online renewal is available.
