July 12, 2010 – Western Canadian dressage riders will have their opportunity to compete in front of world class judges next weekend, July 15-18, at the Edmonton Gold Rush CDI3*. The competition is the first of this level to be held in Alberta; organizers are building on their experience hosting last year’s CDI2*.
Competitions of this calibre are critical to raising the profile of the sport, and providing valuable experience for area riders and their horses. Last year, Olympian Bonny Bonnello entered Pikardi, the Canadian Warmblood gelding she co-owns with Jean Bell, in the CDI2*, his first. This year, they are one of the top contenders for the Canadian Dressage Team for the World Equestrian Games, and are competing in Europe as part of the Dressage Canada European Tour.
The Edmonton Gold Rush CDI3*, which is being run in conjunction with an EC Gold competition, is being held at Amberlea Meadows south of Edmonton. With four dressage competition rings, and stabling for 200+ horses, it is the largest facility north of Red Deer.
Shelagh Hohm, one of the members of the organizing committee, acknowledges the importance of bringing CDIs to riders in the west: “Hosting CDI competitions in Western Canada will ensure that our emerging talent will have opportunities to compete at elite competitions without needing to travel great distances. The more experience our athletes having competing at this level, the better our results will be. There are several combinations this year at the Gold Rush CDI 3* that are starting their journey to represent Canada at the 2011 Pan American Games.”
Sponsors of the event include: Aspen Creek Training Centre, Alberta Dressage Association, Canadian Western Bank, Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation, Dressage Canada, Macleod Dixon, Brian M Thompson Professional Group, Connie Varnhagen, Roberts Veterinary Service, Jane Haslett, Donna Tribe, Windhaven, Cold Lake Alberta Dressage Association, Calgary Area Alberta Dressage Association, Stony Plain Registries, Edmonton Equine Veterinary Centre, The Waterman, Poirier and Associates, D&R Veterinary Services, Maple Leaf Meadows and Masinya.
