Canadian Dressage Riders Win Individual Medals at the 2012 North American Junior and Young Riders Championships | Print |

2012_najyrc_monicahouweling_smallJuly 22, 2012—Canadian dressage riders continued their winning ways in individual and freestyle competition at the 2012 North American Junior & Young Rider Championships held at the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, KY.

Saturday, July 21 featured both divisions’ freestyles, the final leg of the competition. In the Junior Riders Freestyle held in the afternoon, Laurence Blais Tetreault of Montreal, QC, rode her horse Pissarro, a 15-year-old Westphalian gelding, to a gold medal finish with a score of 73.575%. Mariah Sutton of Drumbo, ON and her 15-year-old Oldenburg gelding Renoir, earned 71.050% for the silver medal. Rounding out the top nine with a score of 67.900% was Madison Lawson of Bonfield, ON, and McGuire, a 17-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding, who she co-owns with Nathalie Lawson.

Saturday evening showcased the Young Riders Freestyle, and it was a nail biter to the end for the Canadian riders. Monica Houweling of Delta BC ultimately earned a silver medal scoring 70.825% aboard Rifradin, the 14-year old Dutch warmblood mare owned by her mother Linda Houweling. Mathilde Blais Tetreault of Montreal, QC, riding Michelangelo, her 14-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding, finished in the bronze medal position with a score of 69.325%.

In fourth place with 68.450% was Alexandra Reid of Carlisle, ON, riding VIP, a 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Deborah Miculinic. Tanya Strasser Shostak of Ste Adele, QC, rode Evi Strasser’s Dancing Tyme, an 11-year-old Oldenburg gelding, to eighth place (66.575%), while Megan Lane of Collingwood, ON and Lucky Lemon, an eight-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by Deer Ridge Equestrian, were ninth with 64.850%.

Friday’s individual competition saw the Canadians earned three medals—two silver and one bronze.
Houweling and Rifradin earned another silver In the Young Rider individual test, scoring of 71.237%

“She gave me everything,” said Houweling of her horse, whom she has only been riding for six months. “I am beyond thrilled with how she performed. I would like to give a huge thanks to my chef d’équipe, Leslie Steele, and to my parents.”

Right behind Houweling was Reid and VIP, winning the bronze medal with a score of 70.000%.

“It was amazing to win bronze,” noted Reid. “VIP was really focused and on during our test. He knows his job.”

Mathilde Blais Tetreault and Michelangelo finished in fifth place in the Individual test with a score of 69.263%.

In the Junior Individual test, Laurence Blais Tetreault and Pissarro earned a score of 67.684% for the bronze medal. Sutton and Renoir finished in eighth place, with a score of 65.053%, while Lawson and McGuire were 10th with 64.632%.

Canada’s total medal count at this year’s Championships was nine.  The Quebec Juniors won the gold medal in the team competition on Wednesday, while the Quebec Young Rider team won the bronze medal bronze.
